As is true of most of this series- *location* Noir- this is a mixed bag. Some of the stories were excellent... and a few were incoherent. Unfortunately, it started with an incoherent one, but I'm glad I persevered, because there were also gripping tales in this collection."Black Ice" is an excellent story- disturbing, but all too plausible.Along with "Stairway From Heaven", "Nineteen Pieces" was one of the weakest entries, I thought. OK, there was a surprising twist at the end... but it made the entire rest of the story a non-funny joke- it no longer made any sense at all. "Stairway From Heaven" was just incoherent and boring."Kim" was disturbing but compelling- a take on BDSM I had not read before (and I read a lot!).Guardedly recommended. This is a wonderful collection of short stories from masters of Swedish Noir. Johan Theorin wrote one of the most disturbing novels I've ever read (The Asylum... I still shiver when I think about it) and his story in Stockholm Noir was worth the price of the whole book. But it was Black Ice, by Inger Fremansson that ended up being my favorite tale: a disturbing psychological thriller that is at once creepy and heartbreaking. Some stories I liked a little less, but in general this is a solid collection.
