This is a well written and informative book, but it has one major flaw, which is a significant lack of detail. It is nice if you want multiple reference books, and it is also fairly small so you can bring it along on your trip on the plane. However, I HIGHLY recommend "The San Juan Islands", (New, Revised Second Edition), by Anne & Laurence Yeadon-Jones (part of the "Dreamspeaker" Cruising Guide series). This guide has all the details you need, along with many very detailed drawings of harbors and anchorages drawn by Laurence himself (I think). It provides clear warnings and recommendations on the safest way to approach harbors that are a bit tricky. The approaches to Roche Harbor are a good example, and Lopez Village is another. The photos I provided are of Friday Harbor (taken from shore very close to the Whale Museum, which I recommend!!), along with a shot of the Catalina 42 MKII that we chartered in a rather tight docking situation which we fortunately negotiated without incident (on our first bareboat charter!). Following other recommendations I have read on Amazon, I agree that purchasing an up to date Waggoners Guide for the Puget Sound region is essential. It has VERY accurate maps of all harbors and marinas, which is very useful in planning your approach if you are docking (sometimes the Marinas are very busy and you may not get immediate response on the VHF radio when you are asking which side to tie your fenders on, etc.). The only minor negative of "The San Juan Islands" is that some of the harbor/marina map drawings are out of date, Rosario Resort being the main example I encountered. This is not a big deal but it does matter for a newby Bareboat captain. By the way, for a newby, I recommend tying to a mooring buoy at Rosario, as long as you have a dinghy. Rosario is great and I recommend it highly, but due to fairly consistent southerly breezes coming up the East Sound, docking a sailboat can be challenging. Last but not least, unfortunately the Dreamspeaker guide book series is not easy to buy on Amazon at a reasonable price, but, all is not lost, they are available from the same outlet that sells the Waggoners guides online (just do a quick google search and you will find it). Have fun and happy Cruising in the San Juan Islands, it is worth it !!! This is a fantastic book, and an essential in my boat library. My existing copy is from 2001, and thought I'd purchase the update, as my paperback is a little worn from being used so much. Amazon is selling the latest 2019 version, and I thought this time I'd get the Kindle edition, as I always have my iPad onboard with me, and thought how handy it would be to be able to search the text for specific items. Plus the ability to loan the kindle version to guests before they go sailing with me, so that they can contribute to our itinerary.Alas, the Kindle edition does not live up to the paperback version. First of all, it's NOT the same version. Though the graphic shows the same 2019 cover, it's actually the 2014 version on Kindle. Second, one of the great things about this book are the many chart snippets and illustrations of mooring areas so that you know where to go and more importantly what to avoid, when coming into a harbor for the first time. The kindle version graphics are very low-res thumbnail quality, that don't get any better when you click on them to enlarge them. Text on the charts is indecipherable.I love the book. Just not this version for Kindle.I returned it right away, and will be reordering, but for the paperback this time.
