I've been a Route 66 fanatic for years and I 've been on it many times. I have been on 66 while it was still how you got to California and my father drove a semi on it.These guys were in search of Route 66 and the experience. They missed it completely. They seemed to be full of themselves in a late model Mustang and had to keep asking what made 66 special. Instead of experiencing The mother Road they flew passed famous 66 icons and places. Then author spent pages on American history. He got most of the story about how 66 was named correct leaving out an importantly. There is so much of 66 people and places they missed it's sad. I love Route 66 reads. I hesitate to write this review, since I am only half way through the book. I write because I am most familiar with Afton, Oklahoma. Unfortunately, this portion is glossed over and only mentioned in a passing way. I spent many summers at my Aunt and Uncle's motel Green Acres located on 66, directly across from Buffalo Ranch in Afton. During it's heyday, Green Acres was a good sized motel, complete with detached dinner ( still open ), service station ( long closed ). The motel is long since closed but has come to life, from time to time, as efficiency apartments. I don't fault the author and his companion in overlooking Green Acres, but I do think they should have recognized and explored Buffalo Ranch. It still exists! It was modernized and reopened years ago as a convenience store / gas operation with the original ranch recreated. It's sad that Afton is mentioned without word on this historic spot. I know two weeks is a short stint to explore but I would rather have had Afton unmentioned than not properly highlighted. As an overall observation, I enjoyed the unrelated stories along the way that have little to do with the structures, lives and adventure of the highway itself, but not at the expense of focusing on the history of 66 itself and what it was like to travel both then ( 1950's 1960's especially ) and now.
